If you haven’t been to BHS in the Municipal Center, you may think our Research Room is very quiet, maybe like a library – with everyone reading or studying. It is not! Every Thursday from 2-4 and Saturday from 10-12 the room is a hub of activity with available volunteers doing a variety of tasks, people coming in with their questions and lively conversations abound about – Brattleboro History, of course.
Our volunteers provide the backbone of our organization. Our volunteers spend their time researching, cataloging artifacts, working with the photos (we have hundreds of thousands of them), filing ephemera, data entry, recording podcasts and spending time with people who can’t get enough of local history. As volunteers become acquainted with the collection, they help the general public with their donations or questions. Volunteers may also write stories for the newsletter or Facebook, change displays, or help label and sort mailings to our members.
We are very excited about our new museum for the halls of the Municipal Center and could use more help than we currently have. Would you like to join the museum group and be a part of this exciting project from the beginning? Do you have a few hours a week to help out at BHS? Your reward would be knowing that you have a part in caring for Brattleboro’s local history and keeping it alive for everyone to learn from and enjoy, both today and for generations in the future.
