Our Volunteers

Volunteers

Brattleboro Historical society is an all volunteer organization made up of local people who can’t get enough of Brattleboro history. Our board members often overlap with volunteers thus making a very dedicated group of Brattleboro history lovers who want to preserve our history and bring it to the public.

As you can see, our volunteers are the heart of the society. Although we try to let volunteers do what they love doing (whether that’s data entry, organizing, writing, out reach or any number of other things) – at times we all help with whatever the current need is.

Here are a few current BHS volunteers.

Accessioning and organizing
I’ve resided in New Hampshire for over thirty years and currently cross the river once a week to volunteer at BHS. What’s the connection? Well, I’ve always had an interest in US history and I have ancestral roots in northern Vermont created by Italian immigrant stone carvers; and my former husband, Larry Bloch, who owned a business on Main Street with the lengthy name of “Save the Corporations From Themselves”, but Brattleboro history became a focus of interest through osmosis of enthusiasm from my dear friend of twenty years and now President of BHS, Lee Ha. A writers’ group in Keene was our initial introduction and now, in retirement, I’m happy to help organize for future efficiency. It gives me the opportunity to literally hold history in hand and to be part of its preservation with the perk of learning something new with every visit!

Current history and organizing
Some of the tools of my BHS volunteer trade are scissors, file folders and a Sharpie. I use these tools as I review the Brattleboro Reformer (daily) and The Commons (weekly) for published articles about Brattleboro’s businesses, organizations, educational institutions, local personalities and topics of current interest for filing in our archives. In addition, I archive the Historical Society’s ‘Local History’ column published weekly in the Brattleboro Reformer. One of the things I love about volunteering in our Research Room every Thursday afternoon is the opportunity of meeting visitors (local folks and out-of-towners) who have a special interest in Brattleboro’s history, whether by researching the history of their home, or learning more about a distant family ancestor who once lived here. You just never know who is going to walk through the door.

Estey material, bookkeeping, collections and Past President of BHS
I've been involved with BHS for more than 30 years and there is always something new to do! Whether it's cleaning, moving furniture, scanning photos, helping visitors, filing, writing/editing, researching, answering emails, data entry, or labeling envelopes... (at least we don't lick stamps anymore). Whatever it is, you have the satisfaction of knowing that what you're doing is helping save and share Brattleboro's heritage.
