For the last twenty-six years of his life, internationally acclaimed writer Saul Bellow (1915—2005) lived part-time in southern Vermont, enjoying the summers with his wife in their country house, not to mention occasional jaunts into Brattleboro. He was fond enough of Brattleboro to be buried here, in the Shir Heharim Cemetery, a tranquil section of the larger Morningside Cemetery.
Widely considered one of the 20th century’s greatest writers, Saul Bellow is best known for works such as The Adventures of Augie March, Henderson the Rain King, Herzog, and Mr. Sammler’s Planet, to name just a few. His literary work earned him the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize for Literature, the National Medal of Arts, and three National Book Awards, among other honors.

About the Research sites
The Brattleboro Words Project is working with the community to identify specific sites and themes significant to the study of words in Brattleboro and surrounding towns. Research Teams – classrooms/teachers, amateur historians, veterans, writers, artists and other community members — will produce audio segments and other work to be incorporated into audio walking, biking and driving tours tours.
