The Brattleboro Historical Society will unveil its historic markers project at a ceremony behind the Wells Fountain at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

The project is titled ‘Moments in Brattleboro History.’ The public is welcome to join the Historical Society’s unveiling of the first marker.

Here John Clements of Zephyr Design prepares the sign for his building – where the home of the Bradshaw family, Brattleboro’s first African-American family was located in the 18th Century.

Plaza Park was created making a pleasant view for disembarking train passengers. Visitors had their first glimpse of Brattleboro when they departed a train and walked into town. Also greeting them was a fountain placed in May of 1924 crowned with sculptor Daniel Chester French’s ‘Spirit of Life’ bronze statue.

In 1886, benefactor George Brooks funded the construction of a new library building. Brooks planned and constructed the library. An 1887 Library booklet claims a collection of 5,000 volumes. Since its founding, the library has been a showcase for artwork and an intellectual hub for the region.
